신라 경덕왕 10년(751년) 김대성이 창건한 한국 불교 건축의 대표작입니다. 다보탑과 석가탑, 청운교·백운교 등 국보급 문화재가 경내에 집중되어 있으며, 통일신라 석조 건축의 정수를 보여줍니다. 1995년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되었습니다.
