쇼무 천황의 명으로 752년 완공된 세계 최대 규모의 목조 건축물입니다. 높이 15m의 청동 대불을 안치하기 위해 지어진 대불전은 현재 건물도 폭 57m에 달하는 거대 목조 구조물입니다. 1998년 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되었습니다.
